Genre Fiction Book Reviews

Genres

A genre is a distinct category of literary composition, that is, each genre has a unique plot & characters that set it apart from other types of stories. Six fiction genres are discussed with 6th grade Language Arts students during the 2nd 9-week grading period. These fiction genres are listed below with their characteristics. Click on the genre to link to the book reviews. And remember--genre labels are at the top of the book spine to help you find them more easily!

 

  • Mystery - solve a problem by analyzing clues

     

  • Adventure - survival, exploration, intrigue (spies) & battle

     

  • Horror - terror through supernatural and/or the occult (things beyond human understanding)

     

  • Romance - true love triumphs over all

     

  • Fantasy - imaginary worlds & magical characters

     

  • Science Fiction - speculation & technology (asks what if?); space, biotechnology, time travel, etc.
